I want to start with the resources for a couple of reasons, one is that if interpreter attempts fail, it will be still be possible to import resources in their native format for use in a newer engine.
Not to be a wet blanket on your efforts, but that is exactly what Free SCI was and ScummVM is doing, making a newer interpreter for the existing games. As far as making new games, that would also be duplication of effort. There are two tools that do this currently, SCI Studio and SCI Companion. If you really want to work with it, consider picking up on Brian's efforts and finish developing SCI Studio VGA. It has the full source available. As suggested, you could try to contact people from the Free SCI project for more information.

I must say that I am more intrigued by SCI remakes of Sierra AGI games than I am of new SCI games. Perhaps it's because of the Sierra's own remakes like KQ1SCI.

SCI Syntax Help / Re: Calling a script not working
« on: May 05, 2010, 09:10:04 PM »
It's little oversights like that that can drive you crazy. I needed to have one of my installers check the version being installed because applying a patch to one version of the game would crash the game, so I added routine to the script to read the version file. I went around and around trying to figure out why it wasn't working, even though it look like it was returning the right value. It turned out that it was also reading the return and new line and I was only looking at the version info.

I suspect that a number of his older tools are the basis of parts of SCI Studio and could be considered superseded by built in features of SCI Studio., but think that it good for people to have access to them, still. Too bad we don't have the source.

It sounds like you are just starting the program in Windows and letting Windows start the NTVDM for the application. When you do this, if the program completes (i.e. returns to the command prompt) Windows will close the NTVDM window. It might be that you are not using the right syntax and the tool displays the generic syntax help and closes before you see it. Try opening a command prompt, first and CD into the working folder and then run the program. This way the NTVDM window will not close on completion and you will be able to see any messages.

It should be considered good practice to make sure that the games run without issue in DOSBox. Some versions of Windows no longer ship with the NTVDM and, of course, there are the non Windows users.

Off subject, does anyone know any good text editors for writing my scripts.
I like Notepad++ for general scripting. It is a free, open source project that recognizes many different languages (for syntax highlighting). It is very versatile and robust. It is feature rich, yet small. It is what I use for most of my scripting needs except for NSIS.

It looks like the only differences in features are in the preferences, mostly in terms of export. It is too bad that the source was not released.

I'll leave version 1 up, but I'll also include yours.

OK, I've had a chance to sort through most on my SCI tools and made a page for them.

The Sierra Help Pages SCI Tools page

I also had the SCI utilities from Brian's old Ultimate AGI/SCI Site. Most of these are dated or have been superseded, but I uploaded them to my site, as well.

Older SCI tools

And Brandon, I thought that I had downloaded the SCI Resource Viewer with the CLI version that you had linked to on the SHP forums, but I can't find it. The link is now dead. Could you post it again? You can post it directly on the forum in that thread.

I don't have a page up, yet, but I am working on one, now. Once you have your page done, I can link to both the files on SHP as well as here.

I think that the only things that we have exchanged has been different versions of the Sierra Resource Viewer. What I would like to see is to pool all these together and get them mirrored on more than one server. Some of these are hard to find, these days.

Besides the ones already listed here, like Companion, Studio and the Resource Viewer, I have an SCI VGA Decoder, a Script Dumper, Enrico Rolfi's TraduSCI and UniSCI, Vag's VMD Player. I may have a couple of other things, but I would have to look.
