SCI Syntax Help / Re: How to use Qualifying Adjectives with the parser?
« on: August 16, 2010, 11:34:57 PM »
This may seem like a silly response, given that I have not really looked at SCI scripting, but is it possible to declare a global variable that could be assigned a two word value?

I came across this and thought that some here would find it interesting:

On an aside, I wish that all of the source for these tools were available. Too many pop up and then are abandoned when the original author loses interest or time. The SCI Resource Viewer is a case in point, but there are others. At least Brian released the code for SCI studio VGA before he disappeared.

The source of SCI Studio is available.

Perhaps for batch processing?

Google Game Audio Player.

Everything-Else / Re: ScummVM AGI Sound Support Improved

It's in the current subversion of ScummVM?

Can the template game be updated?

I take it that you mean how the screen scrolls left and right from the portcullis.

Can you decompile the original in AGI Studio to see the elements so as to not miss anything? How much sense can one make of the scripts this way?

Nice idea, but it would be far more complex than that. You would have to also add in everything that the sprites interact with, walk paths, hotspots or any event that would be triggered by proximity. It might be nice to automate the conversion of what it can, like dialog trees, etc.

If you don't want to play the original, you could read a couple of walkthroughs.

Oh well, even Sierra fell victim to Out of Heap errors occasionally.

I want to start with the resources for a couple of reasons, one is that if interpreter attempts fail, it will be still be possible to import resources in their native format for use in a newer engine.
Not to be a wet blanket on your efforts, but that is exactly what Free SCI was and ScummVM is doing, making a newer interpreter for the existing games. As far as making new games, that would also be duplication of effort. There are two tools that do this currently, SCI Studio and SCI Companion. If you really want to work with it, consider picking up on Brian's efforts and finish developing SCI Studio VGA. It has the full source available. As suggested, you could try to contact people from the Free SCI project for more information.
