SCI Development Tools / Re: SCI Sound Tools
« on: April 03, 2010, 03:50:06 AM »
Since both Brian's site and this one had disappeared, I was going to set up an SCI tools page on SHP. I can mirror this any tools available on this site.

Good idea to list ScummVM, but DOSBox is my first choice for both AGI and SCI games. As MI once noted, the sound emulation for the AGI games is bad and generally it does not offer much advantage over DOSBox. The one advantage it does have is the lower overhead that some hand held devices need. The main thing that I am looking forward to is support for the Win version of KQ6 so I can play it on my Win7-64 without having to resort to XP-Mode or installing Windows in a VM.

Hey, MI, what about KQ2SCI?

Looks good, but is there any reason that you used an Arabic number 2, instead of the Sierra traditional Roman II? Not saying there is anything wrong with it, just curious.

You could probably get more information about what the MT-32 would need from the developers of Munt, the MT-32 emulation project.

If you aren't comfortable with using DOSBox, you may want to consider using a frontend like DBGL. It makes setting up games in DOSBox easier.

DOSBox, not a DOS box. It is an open source project that emulates an entire DOS machine. It is what VU shipped the new collections with to make them "XP compatible", though with an older version. There is almost no Sierra DOS game that will not easily run in DOSBox, windowed or full screen. Games can be launched in DOSBox from a single Windows shortcut. It has great sound emulation and can be used with an MT-32. DOSBox has improved so much over the last couple of years that you can now even install Windows 3x in it to play the earlier Sierra Windows only games in it.

With the exception of some Install Shield installers, No 16 bit code will run on 64 bit Windows. In fact there is no NTVDM on 64 bit Vista. Even on 32 bit Vista, no DOS game can run full screen with Vista graphics card drivers. Some have gotten around this by forcing the install of XP drivers. The good news is that DOSBox runs fine on both 32 AND 64 bit Vista.

SCI Development Tools / Re: Music in SCI0 games

I allocated more cpu to dosbox with ctrl-f12 and the game runs smooth with on-point music and I can run it in full screen (Alt-Enter) with great results. But it is quite a task to do all of that.

You can automate everything from the dosbox.conf. Once you find the number of cycles that is optimal for your game you can edit the "cycles=" line to whatever value that you need. One of the easiest ways to use DOSBox is to create a DOSBox shortcut and add "-conf [path\to\dosbox.conf]" to the end of the target to specify a unique configuration for that game. You can then add lines to the autoexec section at the bottom to the dosbox.conf mount a "C:" drive and start the game. A double click on this shortcut is all that is needed to start the game with the right cycles, graphics and audio options, etc.

If you checkout this thread on VU's board, you'll see some that outdo this.
