Tonight the shrieking corpses bleed
« on: October 31, 2018, 01:38:24 PM »
I was very late to the fanmade AGI/SCI movement. Thinking back, I have so many memories from the late 80ís & early 90ís playing Sierra Online games. My first Sierra game was Gold Rush; I must have been 7 or 8 when my mother and I played it on 5.25 floppy on what I believe was a Zenith 286. Fast forwarding to the present, I have a 9 year old daughter and thought I might take a chance and introduce her to these old games. My hope being that she would enjoy the time spent together solving puzzles and everything else as much as I enjoyed the same with my mother so many years ago. To my delight, she actually enjoyed the genre even though she was born two decades plus since these titles came out.

When I started searching for these games from my childhood, I was surprised by the fact that there are now scores of fan made games with such a similar look and feel to the games I grew up on, that playing them triggers that nostalgia portion of my brain just like I was playing some Space Quest title for the first time because I had missed it years ago. It was like striking gold realizing these were basically unlimited. There are however two frustrating things I have run across: 1. A few of the best titles are apparently unfinished and likely will remain that way based on the amount of time that has passed since they were last updated (Time Quest, Daveís Quest); 2. Despite tireless internet searches I have been unable to find hints or walkthroughs which are so often a necessary part of completing games within this genre, at least for me.

So that brings me to my question. Could anyone direct me to a walkthrough for Tonight the Shrieking Corpses Bleed or at least provide me with some sort of helpful information?  I always first try my best to compete these games without any outside help. It is so rewarding to have my notepad and pencil with me while playing so I can jot down important info or draw out a detailed map (KQ6 Minataur lair, KQ5 desert, entire Q4G1 map). But I pretty much always get stuck somewhere. Maybe once or twice Iíve been able to complete one with absolutely no help.  For this game, my current score is 37 out of 97. My inventory contains: shotgun, empty flask, lopping shears, matches, kerosene, knife, shovel, talisman, house key, tree branch. I have the rope going down below the bridge but donít know what to do from there. I believe I have completed everything pertaining to the farmhouse and barn. I have not gained access to the deserted factory or the path off the north east section of the park. Any help would be much appreciated as I very much enjoy this game and want to know what happens. Also, any recommendations as to which other games are the most well made would be appreciated. I have only played a few but my favorites were this game, Enclosure, Time Quest & Daveís Quest.

And like I said, Iím new to this. So please forgive me if Iím not supposed to post this kind of request or if Iíve posted it in the wrong place.

Thanks

I know of none. It might be possible to look at the game scripts to see, but that may be more than you want to do. If anyone here has played it they may be able to give you a hint.

Um...how difficult would looking at game scripts be for a lay person?  I have just about zero technical knowledge about that type of thing.

It might be easier if you ask a specific question about where you are stuck, maybe attach a screen shot of the rooms where you are stuck, and then we could check the game scripts for you.

Good luck. If you get through it and feel like writing a walkthrough, feel free to post it.

Finished it. Very good game, seriously dark too. I will try to write up a walkthrough and post it.

I'll add it to the AGI Wiki when you do.

Two questions:
1. Is there some type of resource I could look at that maybe lists all fan-made games which have had walkthroughs or other info produced in relation to them?  So many titles are well made but there can sometimes be some small counterintuitive blip that halts progress (i.e. a game not recognizing a certain word and instead requiring another word). And despite the fact that Iím sure quite a few people have played some of these titles, I canít really find much info available.
2. If I make walkthroughs for a few of these, perhaps Shrieking Corpses, Tex McPhillip 3, Time Quest, what format should I put them in?

There is the Wiki, but any walkthroughs are just TXT files within the ZIPs containing the games. I would have to go through all of them to make a list of which ones have walkthroughs. You can see the Wiki for a list of all the known AGI fan games: http://agiwiki.sierrahelp.com/index.php?title=Fan_Release_List

Keep in mind that many of these fan AGI games are only small demos that were never developed into actual games. Many were just the product of people trying to learn AGI.

Anything you do can simply be a plain TXT file.

After you explore the AGI fan games keep in mind there are the SCI fan games. There are not nearly as many of them, but they have the higher graphics of SCI with better audio. http://sciwiki.sierrahelp.com//index.php?title=Category:Fan_Releases
