Should SCICompanion support replacing voices in Freddy Pharkas?
« on: October 31, 2020, 04:42:43 PM »
Hi.
Now that you've explained to me how to see the voices in SCICompanion, I've tried to experiment with some changes...

I exported two voices to wav files, and then imported them back - each text with the opposite voice - just to check that it's working.
ScummVM gave a lot of warnings, but it worked.
Then I tried some other change, and now it didn't work.

Should SCICompanion support this, anyway?

Be aware of the audio cache part of the manual. The audio cache exists because it would be too expensive to rebuild the AUD file all the time. Perhaps when you did the thing that didn't work, you didn't rebuild the resources or something.

Managing the audio cache

You can force the audio files to be re-packaged into resource.aud or resource.sfx by using Tools->Repackage Audio. You’ll need to do this if you’re running the game externally (i.e. not from within SCICompanion) and you want to be using your latest audio changes.

From Tools->Audio Preferences, you can also force a repackage of all audio files (instead of just those that SCICompanion thinks are out of date).

You can also clear out the audio file cache completely. This means you will lose any new audio files that have not been repackaged. You will also lose the audio negatives for any recordings you have made in SCICompanion.

Thanks Lars, yes, I did that.

I've now did it again from scratch, documenting every step:

1. Started with a clean copy of Freddy CD
2. Moved all AUDIO/ files to the parent directory
3. Verified that it's OK in ScummVM. (no warnings, voices are OK).
4. Opened the game in Kawa's latest SCICompanion (3.2.3.0)
5. Opened Message.230
6. Exported "Noun 4, Verb 1" (the response to "look barrel") and "Noun 28" (Willy's speech) to .wav files
7. Imported them, swapped (such that we should hear about rain barrels when the game begins, and 'look barrel' will give Willy's speech in response)
8. Verified in SCICompanion that each message has the opposite voice
9. Saved with ctrl-s
10. Clicked Tools->Repackage audio
11. Waited a little...
12. Opened in ScummVM, got a warning upon start:
Code: [Select]
WARNING: Failed to find volume for map.540!
13. Instead of Willy's speech, indeed I heard the rain barrel answer - which is great.
14. However, when I "look barrel", there in no voice, and in the ScummVM's console there is:
Code: [Select]
WARNING: Resource type mismatch loading audio36.230(4, 1, 0, 1)!
WARNING: resMan: Failed to read audio36.230(4, 1, 0, 1)!
WARNING: Failed to find audio entry (230, 4, 1, 0, 1)!
WARNING: wPlayAudio: unable to create stream for audio tuple 67174401, module 230!

Please help...

Kawa, I think it's a bug in SCICompanion (or a misunderstanding from my side...).
Could you take a look?

If I understood the problem well enough, I would.

I'd take AUDMAP.EXE from Omer's stash and do a before/after comparison between 230.MAP. Mind you, I just discovered a use for this tool today, so I can't help you interpret the output. I'd also check why 540.MAP is suddenly mentioned, it shouldn't be affected by the changes you made, I think. Those files should be available in audiocache/ until SCI Compannion decides to delete them.

Sorry I can't be of more help.

Is my problem report not clear enough? Or are you talking about the problem's cause that's not understood?

If I meant your report, I would've said "if I understood what you're saying well enough" 😉
