Hey guys! I know it's been 3 years since the game came out, but I've gotten around to fixing a lot of bugs/inconsistencies/typos/other problems.
I am wanting to release an official update in a week or so. If anyone is willing to go through the game and post anything you notice that could use fixing that would be helpful to me.
Here's the current list of updates:
Fixed:
When I used a dart to release the water I could keep doing that over and over and get more and more puzzle points
Saving in the room with two fighting soldiers crashes the game.
"Talk to woman" (Deborah) give a hateful response even after giving her the letter.
Look at ground gives no response after greaves are taken in store room.
Gallegos is spelled differently in his letter than when speaking to Sammy.
Can't ask Sammy about secret passage - and sometimes get "bad said spec" message.
It is possible to score 122/120 without doing anything wrong...
Cannot ask librarian about bodybuilding/muscles
Asking him about missing books, he’ll not mention those you have, but haven’t turned in yet.
Myths and Legends “lure men DO his demise” misspelling
Cannot right-click on sign in waterfall area.
Cliff area:
• clicking on incline yields a niche reference AND misspelling of “roll”
• “remove/take off armor” should yield a response in cliffs area.
• Allow rolling of marble for “fun” and end with sarcastic message
Asking Sammy about “retirement” should probably yield a response. Asking about secret passage yields “bad said spec” and stock response. Talking with Sammy needs an overhaul!
Large dock – “look” command yields misspelling.
Outside Library – Right click on fence triggers over the fence. “poachers” in reference of crops sounded a little strange.
• Can’t right click on the bush
Inside library – “ask about lost books” yields no response.
• “ask about missing books” works, but he lists as missing books you don’t have instead of books you haven’t given to him.
• He mentions a “list of books” to the side, but there is no graphic representation of such a list.
• “talk to man” doesn’t yield much in terms of further questioning. Perhaps mention the new initiative to aid learning in the form of the IQ test.
• I won the reward of the Titanite flask and then he went on to insult my intelligence, perhaps put that after the winning of the ruler?
• “look at list” gives “missing books:” when all are turned in.
“desperate” misspelled in the item info for the ruler.
Dock house (outside) – look at “lid” should work too
• Perhaps put something in the foreground – it’s too hard to tell that the player can go south.
Kite area – “look” repetition of the word “view” is bad
Face cave
• redraw with obscuring wall of rock
• relocate unearthing
Write more dialog for the two sparring guards.
Ghost w/sword area
• “look” yields “if if” misspelling
• “ask about curse” yields no response
• “ask about dead man” breaks game’s logic
Map functionality doesn’t work in room south of Facecave (exactly where one would want to use it to go to the graveyard)
Mauseleum (up close) – “read stone” says too far away. “read epitaph” works?
Safe – “input” instead of “select” on the artwork
Grove – “give ring” yields response without colored box.
Mailroom – “use goggles” et al doesn’t work.
Troll room – “use tnt” has no response.
Maze room – treasure chest doesn’t look like a treasure chest and can’t right click it. It is almost impossible to interact with at all. Only “take helmet” works as far as I can tell.
Golden bow item description – mention something about tripping the floor trap as a hint on what to do.
Booby-trapped room
• cannot right-click on lantern. “Spell the phrase and you may pass” should be “when you spell the phrase, you may pass”
• “Wear goggles”
• When puzzle is solves, changing it doesn’t kill you
Storage room—look at shelves, mentions darts, but doesn’t take them.
Rotating stairs – “it’s” is spelled wrong in the opening statement
Prison room
• extra blindfold, room for one more – could add statement, “I hope it’s not for me.”
• I think it said I “put the blindfold in a bag.” That can be removed.
The mean old woman doesn’t have a response for “ask about sammy”
Reset button for electric current puzzle (Not enough room for that button?)
Move dead body in pole area
“make hangglider” should work for windy area
“enter rock” or “face” alternate words of entry into the face cave.
“talk to face” in the face cave.
“Use blow dart” in face cave says you have no darts, instead of tell you how to target
“pick up sword” doesn’t work
“light candle” doesn’t work under mausoleum
Walking down from angry ghost. Going North, you can’t go straight up
“enter building” in addition to “open door”
Lower required score for sailboat Xtreme
Hint to move table over trap under Mauseleum
Draw words of full mail warrior
“Copy cat” input should return puzzle to original set-up.
Tunnel – take ring after unearthing the ring should say you already have it
Attributes gained from armor unclear and inconsistent
You get Titanite flask after beating Erasmus, but the window telling you you won is superimposed over a #dispose window explaining what you are about to get.
“Read sign” for Baron Longeau Carmyle’s grave doesn’t work. Also, missing period at the end of the sentence in looking at the epitaph
“look at book” in closet tells you to “view library book” before even taking it.
Use dart/dart gun doesn’t work in whispering cavern with friendly ghost
Asking about the dead man is difficult
Right-click on treasure chest says it’s empty before you take the helmet
Issues yet to be dealt with:
Audio crashes sometimes (frequently in Troll’s cave).
Music for dart-playing would be nice
Scientist building (outside) – have a bird or something get zapped to let you know the danger.
Fight screen music continues after running away

Honestly, I had no idea there was this many problems. But after 3 years, you come back to a project fresh and can see it from a new perspective.
Here's some more fixed stuff:
Sailboat Xtreme speed round TOO fast
The trap says it’s broken at wrong time
Arrow goes backwards
Talk to horse yields no response
Booby-trapped cave – face puzzle (rightclick – eyes watch you even when closed)
“have you play an SCI game before?” Yes/No – Give Help info if not
Title screen rotates to introductions too early.
Redraw “Betrayed Alliance” Title words Redraw Title slide
Move past guard with bow without being shot
“return books” doesn’t work
Draw path to squirrel more visibly
Says “you may left-click” to shoot – but you right click.
“listen” in cave should yield a response.
Ask about “place” that the ghost mentions
Asking singing spirit about vow or destiny yields nothing even though they are words she uses.
Fix climbing animation for ladders

Nice fix list. I'd say I'm looking forward to playing this update, but haven't even played the original.

While the termination behavior is better, it seems that the first note of each song is truncated. Honestly, I don't mind all that much, but during the squirrel music puzzle, it actually ended up crashing sciAudio :/

Sorry to Resurrect an old thread, but I'm working on another patch. I'm trying to make this game better and better to prepare for bigger things (Betrayed Alliance Book2 in particular).
Here's the current list. I plan on recording a Let's Play of the game to find more bugs/other things needing fixing:
• Should be an option to turn off music
• Add difficulty settings: Easy and Hard
o Hard includes more intricate parser commands
o Easy includes ability to skip some puzzles (slide block puzzle)
• Draw new dead thumbnails
o Ogre killing you
o Ghost killing you
o Bugs eating you
o sarcophagus
• If teleport to WELL room from WELL room, Ego disappears.
• If teleport to well rom from adjacent room, not teleport animation (goes for graveyard as well)
• If top waterspring active in GHOST puzzle, game freezes upon leaving room
• Crystal ball cannot be interacted with
• Wizard Room – Wizard’s windows not colored
• Cliff w/vines. Click on graveyard (word “landscape” repeated twice)
• “Use marble” should work to get boulder down
• “Pry open slab (with shovel)” should work in mausoleum
• Block puzzle (“There seems to be a missing piece”) text should be lowered
• “Ask about secret” doesn’t work for Sammy
• Add animation of picking up marbles at meat seller’s house

Just cleaned up the game's Wiki entry. I had updated some of the templates for uniformity between the Wikis, which broke a couple of things on the game pages. You can update the Wiki entry when you release the new version.

Previously, I mentioned converting the game to Sierra Script. I've actually completed that, and greatly optimized the code as well! Here's a list of things I did:
Converted all scripts to Sierra Script.
Replaced all system scripts with the ones from my newer SCI0 template. This caused the loss of the custom window, which now needs to be a specific instance.
SCIAudio has been moved into script number 803, due to its third-party nature.
SetUpEgo is now NormalEgo, and no longer relies on the SetUpActor procedure.
Ego standing still is now implemented with the StopWalk class.
The game's doit: has been removed, using only the generic Game's doit:.
ProgramControl is now HandsOff, and PlayerControl is now HandsOn. They automatically set the cursor now, so any instances of SetCursor in the scripts have been removed.
Several global variables have been replaced with event flags managed by Bset, Btst, and Bclr, and are stored in the gameFlags array.
Script 204, the "use inventory items in rooms" region, is no longer used. It had been duplicated in various rooms. These duplicates have been removed. Using and looking at inventory items is now handled in the Main script.
The HighPrint and LowPrint procedures have been added, allowing for text messages to be displayed in consistent locations on the screen.
Instead of temporarily changing the global text and back color for various messages, and then changing them back afterwards, these messages now use specific window instances with customized text and back colors. On that subject, specialized Print procedures for talking characters have been added.
Text.000 has been reorganized, and the contents of Text.204 have been moved to the
I think the biggest challenge will be to make SCIAudio work in Sierra Script. For now, I'm running the game in plain DOSBox, and using the Sound resources for music.
I'll send you the updated game. This will be quite important in anticipation for the SCI01 sequel.

That's a ton of work! I only wish the conversion took place after I'd finished patching the game. I have a 8-page document of changes/additions I've made to the game since the most recent version.
I will definitely need to take a look at what you've done. Everything sounds great. I'm still a little fuzzy when it comes to the concept of the flags, but I'm sure with some practice I would get the hang of it.

Good News!
I've put in a lot of work to patch and polish the first act of BETRAYED ALLIANCE and the second patch is (generally) FINISHED!
Before I write the installer, I wanted to see if anyone wanted to take it for a quick test run and focus on the following:
- Were there any parser commands that you think should have a custom reply?
- Did you notice any mispellings or out-of-place replies?
- Did you find any remaining bugs?

Unless I get word from my last playtester, I think the game is ready to update on the Wiki (and probably should do so here to).
Collector - I was able to get the DosBox installer up and running for the game, but for some reason the music isn't working when I do it...not sure what's going on. I am using SCI Audio for this project, if that matters.
Also, I wonder if I could rework some of the details on the Wiki...I honestly don't remember if I have an account or permission to edit the Betrayed Alliance section or not.

Attach your NSIS script and I'll take a look. You already have a Wiki account with your real name. If you cannot remember what your pass is, just use the forgot password function to reset it.

I edited the release page to fix things that got broken from some template changes I had made earlier. You should look it over to see if you need to make any further changes. I also set the screenshots to just three across to reduce horizontal scrolling for users with smaller screens. You can add descriptions to each screenshot now as well.

I edited the release page to fix things that got broken from some template changes I had made earlier. You should look it over to see if you need to make any further changes. I also set the screenshots to just three across to reduce horizontal scrolling for users with smaller screens. You can add descriptions to each screenshot now as well.

I will be uploading the latest version quite soon. I want to hear back from another person and tinker a small bit, but it's essentially ready to go and I think really upgrades things a lot in preparation for me to move more fully into working on the rest of the game.

OKAY. I seem to have found part of the audio problem. If I have other audio sources running (like youTube), the audio doesn't work. Also, if I have video capture open (like OBS) the audio doesn't work.
I don't know how or why this is an issue now and wasn't with past iterations, but that's what I have found.
Edit - This isn't a hard and fast rule. Now I'm confused again. The sound works 9 times out of 10, but every now and again, there is just nothing. Weird

Betrayed Alliance Book 1 has now been patched and updated! The user experience will now be much better!

I cannot for the life of me figure out how to throw darts.
Also, another quick thing that could be fixed: asking to play darts with no money gets no response. The command should be met with something to indicate that the player needs gold to wager, if no gold is in the player's inventory. Just a thought.
Anyway, how do you throw darts? I followed the instructions in-game. Clicking and dragging has produced zero results.
Otherwise, it's been a great experience so far. I'm not even up to 30 points yet, so its still early on. But so far, it's tons of fun.

I found another bug.
Getting rid of the flesh-eating flies in the caverns *before* you get the marble, then going back into the first cavern room to get the marble, then trying to go back up to the screen with the flies causes the game to freeze with the hour glass icon stuck. At least it does for me. Restoring my game and grabbing the marble *before* ridding the cavern of the flies seemed to circumvent this error.

Yup, that's a bad bug! The most recent DL has been updated to fix that one.
I'll have to fix the no money dart problem, too. Any kind of alteration to the actual mechanics of the darts game is actually a little beyond my abilities! The coding for that (as well as the artwork) was done by Gumby and whenever I look at his script, it's honestly beyond my knowledge level!
Throwing a dart requires you to click-and-hold mouse button down, swiftly move the mouse and release. It took me some time to get used to it, but once I did it works really well.

Yup, I stealth updated the 1.2 release a couple days ago. It should be fixed if you DL'd it within the last two days or so.
And thank you for the feedback. Any issues you find I would love to hear (or even just quality of life things to make the game better). Someone mentioned how the kite is hard to find because it's on a screen that's tucked away, for instance. And because the kite is a necessary item for beating the game, I'm thinking of ways to guide the player there to avoid the "I don't know where to go" headache. If you see anything like that, feel free to let me know.

Ah, okay. I downloaded it just before you updated it again; missed it by a day or two. No worries. You were right about the darts, obviously; and it DOES work really well once you know how to do it. I'll chalk that one up to user error! I wasn't anticipating the quickness of the drag. Anyway, thanks again for the replies and the game. I'll post any other oddities I see along the way.
