Title: SCI VGA Pics
Post by: Chris Cromer on September 06, 2002, 03:29:18 PM
I am curious, isn't SCI VGA pics a sort of bmp type format instead of vector format?

I think I heard something about it using this, except for the priority and the control screen though.

If you didn't want to know about it why did you reply. ::)

It is an awsome japanese anime series. You can find more info about it at http://www.gundamofficial.com

I think the Gundam Wing series and the movie Gundam Saviour are the best though. :)

SCI VGA pics are bitmapped and vectored. The priority and control screens are vectored, and the visual screen can be vectored, bitmapped or both.

Wow, sounds great, that should help me with my pictures because vector visual screens are hard to do.

There will be a complete background editor in SCI Studio VGA.

Realy?
Can you reference me to an SCI1 game with vectored visual screen? I thought they were all bitmapped ....

I don't know for sure but the Ulence Flats scenes in Space Quest 4 could be vectored!

I don't think any actually used vectored visual screens, but it is supported. For fun, make a simple SCI0 pic without the use of palette changes or brushes (just lines/fills), put it in the directory of an SCI1 game, and poof! Check it out!

The colours will be off because the SCI1 game uses a different palette, and the priorities won't work because SCI1 maps the priority bars which SCI0 doesn't, but the picture itself will work.

What do you mean it doesn't sound like my tone of voice?

As for V, as I have stated before the crew of V has disapeared on me, so until I can get in contact with them V is halted.

What do you mean? It is going to be an rpg and it will have battling. And not all of the Gundam games where fighting games, there where rpg's and stories as well, and even 1 side scroller game, plus now they have 2 new ones for PS2 that are like adventures where you can explore and battle.

Brian: Cool! I wonder why they continued supporrting it while neglecting their parser.
Maybe the EGA SCI1 games used vector graphics?

chris: sorry about that.  Its just I assumed you were more knowledgeable on sci so I thought it might have been someone else using your username. About V, sorry about that too, I didnt realise that production had been halted.

EGA versions of VGA SCI1 games use vectored pics, but they are slightly different from SCI0 ones, so they are not supported by the current release of SCI Studio.

Can we guess that those EGA versions are the reason for the backward compatibility with vectored graphics?

Well I do know stuff about SCI EGA games, but VGA games I don't know much about.

The vectored pics in SCI1 games for the EGA versions are probably the same format as SCI1 pics without the SCI1 palette stuff and bitmapped visual screen stuff.

For EGA games the vectored image makes sense for compression reasons. They aren't backwards compatible though.

It's weird that for the picture editor the default (and only) import format for images is .bmp...am I missing something?  How would I import vectored images if I can only import bitmap files?  ???

When is SCI VGA coming out, and where can I get it when it does?

Thanks,
Grover

When SCI Studio VGA comes out, it will be at the same place SCI Studio 2.1 is available. There's no release date set.

All vector formats are different and none are interchangeable. For example, AGI pictures also are vectored, but are quite different. You can import bitmaps to trace them, but they will not actually be part of the picture. The VGA one will allow importing of a visual screen as part of the picture.
