I'd like to propose a recurring monthly competition, all based around props/views. Winner of each months comp. judges the next month & picks the subject of the next prop - as well as any 'rules' for the comp. that they choose.
All submitted props in competitions will be put in the SCI Art Gallery, for all to use in their game endeavors.
We are nearly half-way into February, but this competition shouldn't involve much time. I would think less than a day's work in total, right?
This month's subject: A brass lantern. No additional competition rules, no restrictions, interpret the requirements as you will.
-
don't forget as a competition sponsor, you may need to come up with the trophies...
A Brass lantern, kind of wish we had orange in our pallette. :P

Yeah, I missed the orange too. I'll put together some trophies.
On another note, I completed my entry last night. The whole process took under 2 hours (used Companion), and I'd never created a view before.

Great idea for a competition, rather than a whole game! I still have a week of school left but after that I'll whip something up myself probably. Is there a size limit? Like would this be used "by the Ego" or would it be like an Inventory view or something? Does it matter?

I struggled with the requirements as well. I put together an animated view of a lantern that could be held by the ego, but that is just me (and I can't win). I think any size would be fine (a large prop could be placed in the foreground of a room I suppose) as would a prop appropriate for an 'inventory view'.
Ultimately, it was harder to define restrictive requirements than I cared for, so I'm leaving the interpretation up to the competitors...

Cool. I've started one. We'll see which direction I take it...

The competition category is now available in the Gallery...

Thank you sir.
Anytime during the last day of the month (and perhaps a few days after), people should upload their art to this new category. We'll want to get things judged promptly so we can move on to the next month's competition :)
-
Okay, there are only a few days of the month left! Still plenty of time to get a submission whipped up & ready to enter into the competition. Seriously folks, you could probably even put together a submission with MS Paint if you are not familiar with the SCI tools (just be sure to follow the palette restrictions).
Please place all submissions in the gallery under the 'Competition Entries' section starting Feb. 28th & no later than Mar. 2nd in bmp format (other lossless formats would work too, but let's keep it simple). If you are submitting an animated view/sprite, please only submit a single bitmap file (for examples, look in the 'Public Domain' section of the gallery).
Good luck & I look forward to your entries!

I completely forgot about this. I'm just going to throw up what I have now.
EDIT: Done.
-
My submission is now uploaded.
-
Nice!
-
If I don't have something up by 7pm then I won't have nothing.
-
Ok, guess I'll have something. Just uploaded it to the gallery page.
-
Not sure if anyone else is planning to submit: at this point I think not. However, let's give it another day and we'll move on to the judging.
-
The results are in. It was tough to call, but here are we go:
1st Place: MusicallyInspired
2nd Place: Cloudee
Nobody claimed 3rd (unless I get it by default for my submission). Cloudee, how should I go about distributing the award icons?
-
Yey! I must say, though, I like your guys' lanterns better than mine. Gumby's was animated and Cloudee's just looks a lot more polished (pardon the pun). This was a much nicer competition, I must say. Making props and things rather than whole games is a little less cumbersome.
-
Congrats Brandon, and Gumby just stick the in a post and I'll stick em in the awards stuff so they show up under our signatures.
-
Ok, I attached them to the results post. They are not much to look at, I'll try to be more creative with the trophies this next month.
-
Sounds like you plan on winning... i'll plug them in tomorow unless Doan or Eigen beat me to it.
-
Not winning, just sponsoring... ;D
EDIT: Since I'm the sponsor of the (ongoing) comp, I figured that I'm responsible for creating trophies for each competition. No?
-
It makes no difference to me, but I thought we were working on the winner becomes sponsor... and sponsor is responsible, ie Brandon.
-
That's sounds fine to me.
-
Ah, I just saw the trophies! Looks like I neglected to make the background transparent on the GIF - or is it that I need to make it the same color as the background of the board?
-
It's alright, I got it... transparent though, as the post background alternates there is no one background color.
-
Thanks! They look much better.
