Title: Ninja Forever
Post by: Kon-Tiki on December 01, 2002, 09:57:00 AM
Ok, this's where that discussion from the SCI-board continues.
For those who can't follow:
I'm making another AGI-game besides Little Pirate (just so I wouldn't grow tired of doing the same thing for months) It's about a ninja who's going on missions from his trainer/boss-thingy. I want it to have some fighting-sequences like FF (and a custom weapon-making feature 8) ), interactive flashbacks to his training/childhood/etc, sneak-command, light/shadow-sensitiveness, etc. While doing the missions, he slowly but surely get clues to a complot, which he'll have to solve at the end of the game.

What I've done so far:
*Title screen (with full animation and sound)
*Ego-view
*Story in big lines

What I need to do:
*Make the game ::)
*Find information (like name, ninja-background, etc)

The information is so I wouldn't make the ninja have flashbacks to when he's 8 and eating dinner with his grandmother, while ninja's're training when they're 8 (for example, really don't know that). Basically, it should be more or less correct without being educative.

Sounds like this could be a Very interesting game. Very uniqe gameplay/story.

I suggest you locate some "ninja-related-websites" and from there learn about the ninja's history and background.

here's a link (don't know how usefull it is...)  http://www.winjutsu.com/ninjakids/nk_stories.html (http://www.winjutsu.com/ninjakids/nk_stories.html)

Good luck and please keep us posted about the project!

Sounds like a very interesting game. I like those new kind of ideas, same thing with Little Pirate. Maybe I'll make a game that is located in Rome, year 14. It could be a quite lot of fun^^I study latin and history of rome and that would be a great help. Anyways, nice idea, me delectat, hope to see some screenshots soon.

A Ninja-link that is of no use to you at all:
http://www.realultimatepower.net/ (Don't forget to click on seppuku)

A link that might be more useful, especially because there is a game making competition (your game will have to be about Ninjai though):
http://www.ninjai.com/index.html (really awsome flash movies!!! Check chapter 1 for a really kewl ninja-weapon!)
Contest: http://ww1.ninjai.com/support/games.php
Check the message board for some interesting stuff about ninja's.

You'll find this rather informative too:

This should be a very interesting thread, especially if you're going to situate the game in the past. Veel leesplezier!

You should check out the American Ninja movies (1 & 2). You will not learn a single thing from then, its just that they are cool!  8)

The idea is great, now all we have to do is wait half a year to see some of it  ;).  The best part will be giving your ego a ridiculously stereotypical name. I suggest Haizutu, Mugatu, Kisaki, Rafiki, Yakamoto, etc.  ;D Good luck on it, can't wait

Hmmm, Rafiki... I like that for some mysterious reason :D
One name's been set: Omochi.
Btw: Look out for screenshots tomorrow or the day after that (I'm studying far less than I should :-\ , but it gives more time for making the rooms ;D )

If you want to choose a name of a previous ninja/samurai/funny hat guy then you have an infinite list of names...If you want it to be a name of some real ninja I definitely suggest Hanzo(that's the first name in "your" order). I have always though that Hattori Hanzo's story is fascinating and I have made an RPG-character called Hanzo(actually in japanese you write it "hanzou" but the last 'u' means the 'o' is pronounced as long). I think a name of any real character would be good, except Ishikawa Goemon^^;He is all used up.

Or just go wackety wacky and make up a name using japanese words like "Yagoi"=scorpion, if I remember right, animals aren't the most important thing in my studies^^;. I think that sounds also a little bit like a name. One of my hobbies is to write fantasy stories and in one the main character is called Yagoi Hebiroku.

omochi is fine kon-tiki...in Stupeur et tremblements Amelie Nothomb mentions that a rice cake is called Omochi. After the narrator gets fired from Yumimoto and goes to the New Year party, she no longer has that interest in rice cakes she had before because she's afraid one is going to say "Amelie-san" in the voice of the vice-president and laugh. Dunno how you could have missed that, it was in the book. That's where I got the definition from anyway.

I have a few names:

Musashi

Masamune

Muramasa

Kiyomori

Yoshitomo

Tokiwa (female)

Yoshitsune

Benkei

Antoku

Toyotomi

Oda

Miyamoto

Musashi

A note about Japenese names:
"In Japan, it is customary for the surname, or family name, to go first, followed by the given name. Minamoto, for example, is a family name-like Smith, while Yoritomo is a given name.Often, given names in a Japenese family begin with the same sound, like Yori or Yoshi. A comparable example in English would be a family of Smiths who named their children "Smith Joanne," "Smith Joseph," and Smith Jody." "   - Secrets of the Samurai, by Carol Gaskin  (has Ninja stuff too. I recommend it)

I think some names like Miyamoto Musashi and Hattori Hanzou are all too abvious names or a ninja except if the game is about them. If you are going to make a character, maybe an evil one, who is not too bright, I suggest Mr.Mori^^;(no offense here)But I got the idea that you have the names already.

Yup, already got names (using a translator and putting different words together ;D )
E.g.:
Dai seems to be a prefix for 'big/great'
Jaaku means 'Jerk'
Daijaaku == ;D

Story for the first demo:

You're Jittokori, a ninja under Rameontai (your daimchyo). Rameontai's region is at the border of his shogun's land. A neighbouring daimchyo (Daijaaku) under a different shogun has kidnapped one of your shogun's geisha's (Oishiihana). It's up to you to get Oishiihana out of Daijaaku's castle  and bring her back to Rameontai, who'll take care of getting her to the shogun.

Guess I'll have to put an explenation of some terms in it. Maybe make another menu-option under 'about' and 'help'.
