Hey gang, it's the start of a new year, and the start of our new home. I have installed an award mod allowing me to issue awards and trophies and rather than see this feature go to waste, I would like to announce the first ever SCI game competition.
The rules of the competition are simple,
- Ends: January 31st
- Rooms: minimum 1 original room
- Characters: 1 original character
- Theme: New Year's related
The rules call for only 1 original room, and one original character, therefore, you MAY borrow any additional graphics from any other source. As far as the New Year's theme, that can be anywhere from using characters like father time, the baby new year, or even having a quest to eat cabbage (old wive's tale about eating cabbage on New Year's and good luck) or even to catch the ball in Time Square as it drops. As long as it has something to do with New Year's.
Now let's get out there and jumpstart our community a little.
-
Nice idea! I'll try to come up with something.
-
You've got a month. I figure we'll run our competitions the same way everyone else does, the winner gets to "sponsor" the next competition deciding rules and whatnot. Likewise they will judge the entries of their sponsored game. So since I'll be judging this one I can't enter ;)
I can only hope there is a little competition for you. I know our member count is pretty low now, so really two entries is a good turnout, but three, that would make our first competition a flaming success.
Since you've been in a couple of the old agi contests Eigen I'll leave you to yours, but to anyone else I would like to make some suggestions. Keep it small, a game with 150 rooms, you just aren't going to be able to finnish. A game with 3 rooms, more than adequate for these types of competitions. Don't get ate up with the graphics. I don't know anyone around here who's an artist and I wouldn't expect anyone to be, the point isn't to make a Sierra Quality game, but just to make something creative.
-
AWESOME idea! I am going to go to the drawing board! This should be fun!
Happy New Years!
-
So the good news is, the trophies have been completed. I must admit though, the second place trophy is really an edited version of one of the ags forum trophies, but it was too close to what I was going to draw so it became easier to steal it and change it than to redraw the same thing again. So whoever gets second place, sorry bout that.
Now all that is left to do is to get them to show up in our signatures. While I work on that, you guys work on your games.
-
oooh...trophies :o
-
Of course, what's a competition without reward. The trophies will become part of your signature, where the rest of the community can envy them with each post you make.
I have everything working as I want it to, and have added the three trophies up for grab to my own signature just for now, I'll give them out to the winners at the end of the contest.
-
My game is coming a long nicely. SCIStudio did crash after 1 hours work I had done the other day, but I won't let a little frusteration keep me down ;)
I take it you are the judge Cloudee1?
-
Glad to hear your working on it Doan. Gives me time to work on that pac man score of yours ;)
Yeah, I'll be the judge of this one, then whoever wins will be the judge of and also set the criteria for the next competition.
-
Sounds good! Hopefully my game turns out as cool as it seems in my head.
lol! I hadn't played pac-man in so long, I forgot how fun it was!
-
Don't make it to ellaborate, you've only got a couple of weeks left. I've spent the last two days on a background for a game I'm not even thinking about working on for a long time, and it's still barely more than an outline :P
-
Just one more background to go! (3/4 done, 75%).
- story (95% done)
- sprites (100% done)
- animations (40% done)
Should be finishing up soon!
-
Just about a week to go and the deadline will be up. There is still enough time to throw something together if you haven't started yet. No one has actually entered anything, so your chances of winning are actually quite good.
I encourage everyone to brush off the sci cobwebs and enter the New Year's competition.
-
Rooms are complete!

Sprites are complete!
Almost all the work is done. Got only a few days left! Must hurry!
-
:o
Damnit Doan, you are going to scare off the competition.
Looks good. After you finish it up you can spend a little time trying to get that pac man trophy back. ;D
-
Well, I am probablly not going to get my game done in time, but here are the rooms I designed...

-
Also, here are the characters that I was wanting to put into the game. All original, but maybe not as polished-looking as Doan's...

So far I have only had time to code one of the rooms (I originally planned on having 3)
Hopefully everyone else can get their's done and in.
-
Those are cool characters! And the hourglass is pretty sweet!

I would be willing to accept a late entry or two for this first time around, So if you only need an extra day or two it could probably be overlooked this time as long as your other competitors have no objections.
My youngest daughter turns 1 on the 1st so I won't have much spare time to play any entries that day anyway. So really as long as it's done by the second it wouldn't delay anything. I would like to announce winners on the third, so that we can get another competition going that I can enter too :P
-
I will have to send mine to cloudee's email I am too dumb to figure out how to attach it.
Sorry,
JT
******************
I got it and have attatched it to this thread. ;D
It probably wouldn't go because it was larger than I set the file max limit. But you had a lot of the scistudio files zipped up in there too. Once I removed those it was within the limits.
* Atatchment Removed, This game can now be downloaded from the Fanmade games pages.

Way to go jtyler! I still have a good chunk of coding to take care of!
Good to see someone submit something! You were the first!
-
You started off with such a flurry and then got so quiet there for a while Jt I was afraid you had taken off on us. Glad to see your still with us.
I got your entry and atatched it to your last post. The first official competition has it's first official entry.
;D
-
Very cool pac-man-style game! I don't think I will finish tomorrow. I planned on it, and it's not so far off, but I think I am getting the 24-hour-flu-that-makes-you-wish-you-were-dead that my sister and mother had over the past couple of days. Feels like it may be my turn :(
Anyway, good job jtyler! It was a really cool idea!
-
As I mentioned a couple of posts ago, you will actually have until the 2nd to finish any entries and still have them considered for judging. So don't give up hope, there may still be time yet.
-
Yes,
Cloudee1 is right I trailed off for a while because I got food poisoning. Right when I was starting to try to put together to avoid script for my ghosts. My throwing up put an end to that. I thought I was just sick of staring at the computer screen working on the game...and before I knew it I was blowing chunks...and stuck in bed for two days straight...not to mention a foggy head for the week after. I will be checking in now and again but my JOB is starting to get crazy so I am really focusing on that.
I will be around...waiting for the next competition...I will have a million more questions for Cloudee1 and everyone else I am sure...thanks guys.
Thanks,
JT
-
That is my wife's birthday also...weird. Happy Birthday to your daughter.
-
Alright! If I don't have it in on the 2nd, you can beat me to death with sticks...but I should be able to do that! Thanks for extension - that flu was a jerk man! Probably not as bad as food poisening though! Sorry to hear about that jtyler!
-
my games too big (290KB) ...can you raise the limit?
-
my games too big (290KB) ...can you raise the limit?
Bumped it up to 450 kb, so you should be all fine to attatch it now Doan. Sorry about that. I was close though with my initial guess of 250 kb.
Looking forward to seeing your entry.
-
there's-a my game-a! oooo yeaaaa!
* Atatchment Removed, This game can now be downloaded from the Fanmade games pages.

;D Sounds like it feels good stamping done on something. One of these days I hope to accomplish the same feat myself. I've downloaded your game Doan, but I'm going to wait until after I've slept to make any formal judgings tomorow, just in case Trodoss or anybody else is busy working away finishing up theirs.... Either way though, early on I said I know our member count is pretty low now, so really two entries is a good turnout, but three, that would make our first competition a flaming success.
While right now we are just short of a flaming success, by my own figuring there was still a good turnout.
But either way the awards will be announced tomorow afternoon, ending our first sci competition.

Ok I solved Doan's game...with only 34 points and I never was able to read the note from the Doctor,
I cheated a little only because the save game option crashes the game...and there are only a few typos (this coming from the king of post typos...but I am actually good at editing)...but it did not hinder gameplay...I know I won't win the competition now. I am very impressed...I totally forgot about the *******...that was a good twist...because of everything happening I forgot about it and wanted to try to shoot something...but I could access the game script code to see what to do...I am a cheater...again only because I got tired to playing the first four scenes over and over again because the save game option crashes the game.
Thanks Doan...hope to work with you in the future on something.
Thanks,
JT
PS. I don't care how the game does it I still think adding a picture to the pic editor would be awesome if we could do it...then you could walk on a screen with the pyramids behind you or something...just quicker to paste than to hand draw then.
-
Awesome I just saw that I got second place...I am ready for the new game Doan...get it started...I am ready to win to create my own competition...I have one all picked out and was ready to win by default...but I have to say your game is pretty cool....
Thanks,
JT

Alright, the trophies have been awarded, it feels lonely in my signature without them :'(.
Even though it wasn't an official entry, Trodoss manages to capture third place by posting the screenshots of some of the work he had done. While I acknowledge it wasn't an entry, in lieu of a third entry it is the third best submission, it's too bad to I was lokking forward to seeing the monkey creature in action.
JTyler, lands second place with a non-adventure based game SCI-Man a takeoff on the classic pac-man. I'm not quite sure why the grapes can pass through the walls too, but all in all a very original idea and an "arcade" submission was entirely unexcpected. Special congratulations for thinking outside of the box.
Doan what can I say, congratulations on winning first place. I can't seem to come up with anything to say that doesn't sound like I'm writing a commercial for your new year's game so I'll just leave it at great job, the animations, the music, the rooms, all top-notch.
And with that the New Year's game competition comes to a close. Thanks to everyone who entered or showed interest. Now we'll leave it to Doan to sponsor the next competition.

I think you get a point for trying to go potty.
I cheated a little only because the save game option crashes the game
Dos can't handle too long of a directory name so if you placed the game folder on your desktop when you were playing then yes save game will crash, but if you put an sci folder on the top level of the c drive, and then put all sci game folders in there you should never have a problem with the save game again. So like the address would be "c://sci/scigame"
-
Yup! Cloudee1 is right...you get a point for trying to go potty lol.
I really should have coded in something for 'read/note' - If you look in your inventory you can look at and read it there, as well as the other items you pick up.
typos! Whew...I'm lucky only to have a "few" - with all the typing and last minute code crunching, I'm happy to have it near bug-free (though I still suspect there are a few, and maybe even big ones!) and mainly coherent!
The new game competition rules are up and I am looking forward to judging the submissions!
-
Congrats! I just tried out the games, pretty fun. I haven't finished them yet but I'll try to do that later. Good job!
I couldn't work on my game but I'm working on a project that is *sci related* so I can be excused ;D

-
Doan, I tried your game... the graphics are amazing! But because it crashes when I try to save a game, I'm not sure if I have the patience to finish it....
I put it under the debugger and it seems to crash in the init method of the Save class. It also brings up a message that says "font 3881 not found", but I think that's a red herring...
-
That's strange I just went and saved a game without issue. It might be a csae where the space in the foldername causes the dos to read it as nine characters and doesn't dos create a limit of 8 character filenames plus the extension. It's just a shot in the dark, but I can save mine. At least right from startup anyway, I don't have time to play into it right now.
-
Someone else mentioned it crashed for them too... Thankfully Doan included his source code... I was able to find what was causing the problem and fix it. But I have no idea why it was causing the crash.
Anyway, for the other person for whom it was crashing, open up syswindow.sc, and scroll down to the init method of the SRDialog class.
Replace the "(send gGame:name)" on this line:
= local2 GetSaveFiles( (send gGame:name) strBuf strPtrs )
with a text string.. e.g.:
= local2 GetSaveFiles( "blah" strBuf strPtrs )
I'm still not sure what was going on... somehow, (send gGame:name) was returning a bad string (I would expect it would return "Template", since that is the name of the Game instance).
Anyway, try that.
The DOS thing shouldn't matter, I think. Each file path has a DOS name that doesn't use spaces, and that's what the game will see... at least, I've never had any problems running the games from directories with spaces in them.
[update]
Ok, I just realized what is *really* causing the problem. It's the length of the filename... "Template" pushes it over the limit... while the "blah" I used above keeps it under. So it is indeed related to filenames, Cloudee.
So no fix is needed to the game... just put it in a directory that is shorter than "c:\documents and settings\user\desktop\etc....", like Cloudee suggested.

Sorry about the save issues - it never was an issue on my computer! My brother played it, saved it, and nothing went wrong. I have no idea how or what I did to make that error!
Thanks for the comments about the game and graphics!
