Ok guys, not sure how many people are around but it's been awhile since we have done one of these. So with school pretty much coming to a close and winter/ christmas break upon us, I figured we could try a winter break contest.
Requirements:
- 1-5 playable rooms. - This is only a suggestion, not a requirement
- You can steal rooms and sprites, they do not need to be original
- I want to see a couple of snowflakes fall. More is better!- really this is only requirement.
- Can be about christmas or new year, but doesn't have to be.
Deadline: January 13th, 2013
-
Will do my best :)
Merry Christmas folks ;D
-
I'll give it a shot.
-
It's on. I've got my first room sporting around 80 snowflakes.
-
I don't have 80 going, but my first rooms functionality is complete and snow is falling.
-
I'm still working on my first room, though it's nearly done (and it might just be the only one). I don't know how animators do it, I have spent a ridiculous amount of time on views and pics.

So far, the game that is coming out is absolutely nothing like I had planned on making when starting out. As in my usual style, when making a game for a competition it is absolutely not an adventure game, so I don't want anyone to get their hopes up to high. On the other hand though, just like with my other competition submissions, I am doing something in SCI that has never been done before so there is that to look forward to.
I had planned on making a series of mini-games all with a winter theme, but now it is just one mini-game that gets progressively harder as you go from room to room. So far, one room complete... two rooms the game is functional and beatable but the backgrounds have not been completed. Hopefully I'll find time in the next few days to get the backgrounds drawn and add in some music, so there will be at least three rooms. After that, maybe add a couple more screens, but we'll see.
Anyway, snow is falling and puzzles are puzzling... just need to finish it up.
-
Looking forward to seeing what you put together.
My submission is an adventure game, and it's all my own creation (didn't borrow any sprites or rooms from existing games). I'm very happy to finally have created a fully working game, quite complete from beginning to end. Only one room, but feature-packed.
I'll have my submission ready by the end of the weekend.

Awesome to hear it Gumby! I can't wait to see what you and Cloudee have put together! The bad news for me is that I didn't get any work done on this competition...the good news is that I have been working on Betrayed Alliance more :)
Good luck with the submissions!

My game (120 Degrees Below Zero) is now on the fangames page. It features sciAudio sound, right-click 'looking', a health meter, and a ridiculous number of views (probably too many, the game is slightly laggy). Check the included game.txt for additional installation & information.
Let me know what you guys think!
-
Nice! I wonder if the snow view might share some of the blame for the lagging, since it has to be constantly cycling through cels over and over. And how many instances of it are running at any one time?
-
Its definitely the snow :)
Its 20 different instances of a single view, randomly placed on the screen with randomly chosen initial starting cells. Each snow view consists of 4 snowflakes falling. As I recall the view has around 50 cells.
-
With SCI games I normally set core to normal and cycles to 10000 to avoid the many timer bugs. If you set core to dynamic and cycles to max in the dosbox.conf, it will fix the lag.
-
Well, a touch of the flu kept me from meeting the deadline. I still have one room to finish the background on, so my game still isn't done. Since I can't win anyway though, I decided that I should put a little time tonight into the trophy for first place... which of course goes to Gumby. Congratulations!!!
I tried to draw a snowflake, I'm not sure if I accomplished my goal, but nevertheless, the trophy has been awarded and can be seen in Gumby's signature as a badge of honor. Not only for winning the competition but for completing a game. That isn't always an easy thing to do.
By the way, is Santa wearing long johns or is that a black thong? :o
-
Collector, yes, using those settings in the dosbox.conf file certainly fixed the lag. However, after playing I think I actually think I enjoy it more with the lag, seems more realistic - otherwise the snow falls too quickly & Santa moves a bit too fast, at least for me. Thanks for the tip!
Cloudee - we'd all still like to see your game, you sounded like you were pretty close. Oh, and that isn't a thong, it's supposed to be his belt :) Of course, looking at it now, I think I failed to properly include his coat in the ego sprite, oh well.
That snowflake trophy looks pretty good to me, nice job!

You can throttle back the cycles in DOSBox by pressing Ctrl+F11 till you get it where you want.

I threw together a sketch and have called this game complete. I am certainly not content with the title screen image or the background of the first room, in the end I figure those are minor concerns and don't really matter. This game isn't going to be one that people long to play over and over again. It's definately challenging, but it is also a christmas themed puzzle game so maybe it'll get a lot of play next christmas ;)
Anyway, Winter Wonderland is now available from the fan games page.

Cloudee, nice game. Got past level 1, and my brain began to hurt on level 2. I haven't played that type of game in many, many years. Never would have considered a game like this to be implemented in SCI. The music is a nice touch too.
-
There is a sliding tile game created in AGI, that's what gave me the idea. Really just to see if I could figure out the logic of programming it.
Like I said before, this certainly isn't the game that I started out making. I had planned on making several little puzzles. A snowflake matching game, a sliding tile game, where's Waldo search with scrollable screen, and a snowball fight with some carolers (basicly a straight rip from my shootem up game) But in the end there just wasn't going to be enough time to get all of the graphics in order. So instead this is what came out. Weak in comparison to what I had planned, but it works for what it is. There are still remnants of the snowflake matching game which can be found in script 1
I thought the music worked pretty well too. There seems to be a bit of lag toward the end of the second song, but it doesn't last long so I let it go.
-
Cloudee1! I can't believe you made a sliding puzzle game! I made one of those in my BA game too lol! I wonder if we implemented it the same way in the coding.
Anyways, like gumby after completing round 1 my brain started to hurt for round 2, which I did not complete.
Gumby's game was cool also...but I honestly played for 15 minutes before I gave up and looked in the code for a clue
-
The source code is included in Winter Wonderland, give it a little peek to see how they compare.
And if you think round 2 is tough, just wait until you see round 3... Easy alt debugging is still in place. If I remember correctly the third puzzle is actually room 2 ;)
I don't know why I like making, or rather, attempting to make puzzles and arcade games so much. I think it's really just the challenge of the logic behind it. It's all building up to the day I try to remake astro chicken. That will probably be my programming apex. Once I can do that, I can do anything.
I remember being especially proud of myself for recreating the leisure suit larry 2 copy protection.

Holy Crap, it does not feel like it has been a whole year since this. Feels like it was only a couple of month's ago that I hammered out Winter Wonderland. Time has really flown this past year.

Are you saying that a dead rabbit makes time fly?

Are you saying that a dead rabbit makes time fly?
If he does't say it, I will!

I can back up that statement as well :)
