Title: Spam
Post by: Collector on November 22, 2013, 02:45:49 PM
There seems to be a new generation of spambots. Most sites I know of are under attack, including mine, and it seems here, too.

I got rid of some of the posts, don't have access to get rid of the ones in the tutorials section.

Looks like it is time to setup some IP blocking.

It's getting bad! I've deleted a number of them and banned many IPs also

I don't know what this board supports, but I turned off allowing multiple attempts on the CAPTCHA, which seems to be working so far. I looked at the logs and noticed that it was taking the bots about 4 attempts to get the answer. Apparently there is a new botnet and an evolution of the bots. Everyone is getting slammed.

Unfortunately I do not see where I can limit the captcha attempts. I have gone ahead and added a couple more question/responses to the registration process. It's a pain that I need to make it more of a hassle for people to register, but today has been a very busy bot day. With any luck, the couple of extra questions will at least stem the tide.

It looks like we have pretty much gotten rid of most of the spam that was added today, if Doan or I missed anything, let us know and we'll get it in the trash with the rest of the garbage.

I am about ready to block the entire Russian Federation range of IPs for my site.
