Title: Second SCI Game Contest!
Post by: Doan Sephim on February 03, 2007, 05:59:51 PM
Alright! Welcome to round Two of the SCI Game Contest!

The Game:
- In "Groundhog's Day" style you are trapped replaying the same day over and over.

The Rules:- 1 room (min and max) - other rooms can be used for intro and ending (but ONE live-action game room).

- As many Characters as you like (minimum 1, "the ego")

- The room must reset itself at regular intervals (this can be time specific or activated). When the room resets, something can be different.

Ending time is one month from today: MARCH 3rd

Any questions? just ask?

Man Doan, that's a tough one. I have an idea, but I'm struggling with the plot and look. We'll see if I can pull something together for this one, I'm not sure yet if I can  :-\

I do have a clarification though, when you say one playable room, what constitutes a room. one background and/or one script? And can it be supplemented midplay with non-playable cutscenes.

Sorry if it's tough...it was tough for me to think up something! I would say you can go crazy on the cut scenes if you want to.

I like it Doan.  Maybe I'll come up with a submission  ;)

The angle I took with my game has made it pretty dark. Not dark like in a good way either. I'm not sure if I can get it done that it would even be amusing to play.  :-\

So how are the games going?

There is still plenty of time if you haven't gotten anything worked on yet.

Cloudee1, there is no rule that the game cannot be dark...one of my favorite games is dark (Silent Hill 2) - The fun-aspect of dark games is altogether different than what we are used to from SCI games, but hey, a different fun is still fun.

I've officially scrapped the first game I was doing for this competition. Remember I said it was dark, not in a good way. Besides that I kind of worked myself into a corner with the story line and refused to find my way back out of it.

Never fear though, I have started another game for this competition. I wasn't sure if I was going to have time, but I'm going to try and make time. Realisticaly I have already finished more of the second game than I did for the first, and I need a lot less, so progress is good  ;)  I wish I would have decided this two weeks ago though.

Aquarius

Scripting: 99.2% complete
Sprites: 98.9% complete
Backgrounds: 75% complete
Music: .02%

Shouldn't have any trouble finishing up what has to be finished up. The majority of my .8% left to script involves adding the music play to the rooms init, and I've got two cels left to draw.   ;D

Title: Aquarius: An Aquatic Experience
Post by: Cloudee1 on March 03, 2007, 09:55:32 AM
Alright, check the games page. You should find a new game there to download.  ;)

I definately couldn't think outside the box much this month, nothing to impressive as far as the competition theme, I bent the rules a little bit in that it's technically not the same day, but every day is the same day when you're a goldfish. And the room doesn't technically reset, but all of the variables that recognise what day it is do so...

Anyway, it's done, it's available. Aquarius: An Aquatic Experience.

Three days isn't too shabby really. I've had goldfish survive less, so you are at least doing better than they did.  :P

It's been a loooong time since I have seen day 5.

that game is rip-my-hair-outta-my-head hard! Great job on the art and animations! Cool intro too.

You owe me a hat though, since most my hair is gone now.

Great job on the graphics cloudee... serious attention to detail!

It is pretty hard, for being so simple. That hair had probably fallen out already though, you're not going to blame your balding on me.

Who knew goldfish had it so tough. There was originally going to be a couple of more obstacles but it started to feel like it was held togther by an ever thinning kite string, so I cut it short but I'm sorry I didn't get the cat sitting on top of the tank ready to scoop you out in there. Oh well.

Ok that Fish game is pretty good, give me a few days to get my entry in and then we can call it quits...not sure if my graphics are up to parr with Cloudee's  but I am trying...

Good job Cloudee...are there any other entries????

Mad Chatter Out

Well then what are you doing out here, you should be busily finishing it.  ;)

I have an idea, and I can borrow most of the graphics from other games... but I just can't seem to create any puzzles out of it!

... ok... just as I'm writing this, I've got some ideas - if I really simplify my game... which seems to be necessary at this point!

where can I find a cow view? :-)

Game is coming along.... graphics are the hardest part, but they're mostly done now (since the room basically just repeats itself!)

I'm pretty much done... at least with puzzles and gameplay.  I just need to spiff it up a little and write a little more backstory... hopefully be done tomorrow night...

Done and uploaded.... it's short.  And easy.  And I "borrowed" a lot of graphics.

Last I heard, I got a pm saying there was a bug in the uploaded one, and that T was getting another one up.

As soon as it's there, I'll approve it, just so you all know you're not waiting on me.  ;D

But from what I saw of it.  8)

It took 4 tries to upload it, but I think maybe it finally worked?  I hadn't been typing in a description, since I already gave one with the first one.  I hit submit and nothing seemed to happened.  Finally I put some spaces in the description field and then I got a message that it was uplaoded when I hit submit...

It should have placed an error line above the form, telling you to fill in the description, it should regenerate the form fields you had filled in so it might look like nothing happened, likewise it shouldn't have been outsmarted by the spaces though ???

Regardless, I deleted the first buggy one, renamed the second good one, and it is now ready to be downloaded from the games page.

Recent update, Ok Troflip just uploaded yet another one  ;)

I reset the download counter, if you had downloaded The Farm Nightmare before now, then you may want to download the newest one.

Sorry for the constant updates :-)  It wasn't too serious a bug, but the new version gives you more details about what's going on outside...

I notice you didn't include the source files.

Is there any way after the competition ends we could get those. I see you use some regions and I was wanting to look at all of that a little closer.
Title: Re: Second SCI Game Contest!

Sure, I'll upload another version after the judging, with the source.  I left it out because it helps people cheat!  :-)

I'm also preparing another version of SCICompanion... I've fixed lots of bugs I found while writing this game.

And I'm trying to (manually) decompile a Motion class in space quest 3 called "Orbit"... should be interesting.

Man Troflip, I wish you woulda left the source code there because I NEED to cheat on your game! I cannot for the life of me figure out what to do!

Edit: JT, how much time do you need to complete your game? I'm gonna have to end this compitition some time soon ya know!

The game advises you to "look through" the gem...but JT, how do I use the darned flashlight?
Title: Re: Second SCI Game Contest!
Post by: troflip on March 11, 2007, 04:38:37 PM
Ok, I get a point if I look through the gem.  But I don't understand why...
How do I leave the room?  Nothing happens if I walk to the exit.

notice anything odd about the painting when you look through the gem? You can't see it otherwise, but it is there.

Ok, neat concept with the paintings!
I got as far as the Rembrant, the room with nothing else in it...

A couple of things:
   - your code for exiting the room is in your handleEvent method instead of the doit method.  That means you have to move, or type something, to exit the room (instead of it just happening when you walk on the control panel)
- a bunch of the painting descriptions have their text clipped...

All right, after playing and completing all the games (except that cloudee1's is unbeatable) I have come to the following decisions.

First I would like to say that I was really impressed with the originality in all the games! They were all really cool ideas based on my "repeating" rule. Now, on to what you all really care about:

(http://scicommunity.com/sciforums/awards/7859_ghog1.gif)First place goes to Cloudee1 for his game "Aquarius: An Aquatic Experience". (cute groundhog no?)
Even though the game was not an "adventure" game in the usual genre, I think that (1) the idea was cool, (2) it was pretty funny, (3) the animation and art was great, and (4) it offered a unique, but perhaps overly challenging gameplay.

(http://scicommunity.com/sciforums/awards/27798_ghog2.gif)Second place goes to JTyler for his game "The Gem Scenario". This game used paintings as the puzzles for the recurring art room. nice use of a time-based puzzle clock gave it a sense of urgency! It was a bit buggy, but it was fun nonetheless.

(http://scicommunity.com/sciforums/awards/5093_ghog3.gif)Third place goes to Troflip for his game "The Farm Nightmare".  (it's not a pile o' poo, it's a groundhog hole!)
This game certainly wins third place not for want in ingenuity and interesting puzzles. The idea for this game was really cool and the text was often very funny. Only problem was it did not feature an original playable room. Certainly a great entry regardless!

Since Cloudee1 takes first with his very unique entry, I will leave it to his discretion concerning the next compitition.
