SCI Development Tools / Re: SCI0 / SCI1 Sounds to MIDI?
« on: July 05, 2016, 02:07:52 PM »
I don't see the problem. This played perfectly fine in SV, Foobar2000, MUNT, Media Player Classic, and Anvil Studio.
Thanks, that version works fine. The version I tried to export is the MT-32 version, sounds fine in SV but outside it has hanging notes on specifically the first major melody.

This logo that's currently being formed looks a lot better than just some text, it's more professional and makes us seem like a more welcoming community. A suggestion I have though is that this needs a tagline or slogan, something that paints us in a good way, and makes us even more welcoming.

You sure you're using V1 of SV? I've never had that problem with hanging notes.
I've tried multiple versions of V1 that I've found. One released the MIDI tracks with no audio except a weird sound at the start of all the tracks, and this one releases the MIDI with garbage data like note on / off volume, and for some reason this specific track in the Hoyle III theme hangs and layers notes instead of playing them then stopping.

I've played INN via INNRevival for a number of years before it went offline sometime last year, and I'm still an advocate that there's a space for INN in the online gaming scene if handled correctly, a online game that is "simple enough for my grandmother to play" as Ken Williams said.

Dave Grossman of LucasArts said that, not Ken Williams.
http://www.sierrahelp.com/Misc/INNRevival.html states "Sierra On-Line founder Ken Williams wanted to create a network that even his grandmother would find easy to use, and to that end INN featured a unique emphasis on a friendly, graphics-heavy interface."

<HammerGuy> "No time to grief while still being griefed"
<CTxCB> ...Also gives PhotoBOMB a new meaning! ;D
BTW, where is this conversation? Is it IRC? I love chatting on IRC... If so, I'll probably join and talk sometimes.

I didn't manipulate the glyphs in any way. That I is as it would appear in-game, if "she's naked" or "he's back" contained any I at all.
I think it's because the S and C look nice and big, but the I looks squished in comparison. :P

I'm quite new at SCI Programming. Not AGI or SCI as a whole, I've played most of the Self-Published Sierra Lineup (Not including ones made by external developers and published by Sierra).

"No-Shirt Developers" is going to be my first SCI Project, it's meant to be a homage to the style and feel of a Leisure Suit Larry game whilst being somewhat original as well... Full of jokes and meaningless side adventures that just add to the fun, and lots of ways to expire. I'm hoping it'll actually be a finalized game, but yet, I'm only experienced in writing and scripting, so more important things like art or music are going to be difficult for me.

The focus of NSD are the SCIProgramming Forums and four main characters in the form of habitual posters to said Forum. These characters are real posters which have silly nicknames instead: "Comfy-Shirt Kawa", "Inspector Gumby", "Troll Flip" (Troflip) and "The Collector". Before I go on to discuss more about the game I'm looking to get permission from the aforementioned members to use them in a video game basically about the SCIProgramming Community in a fun, comedic way.

That I in SCI seems a little weird, but yes, something like that. There could be a competition and everything to decide the logo, where people submit their own designs and stuff.

Do you have enough money to buy the rights of INN from AOL, or whoever they were subsequently passed on to? Not saying you need them, but this could be the first step to a new INN, maybe... I'm hanging out on that hope still, INN was way advanced for the time and the area of what INN is now seems empty and unexplored in the online gaming market now as a result.

I had a correspondence with one of the original INN developers. He told me he tried to get AOL to consider selling it to him when they shut down worldplay, but he couldn't even get them to look at what they had.

I have no idea if I have enough money to buy something which I don't know the price to. But I don't think I'd try to buy it anyway. For me, the challenge of reverse engineering the service is what drives me to do it.
I understand that, but I wouldn't think it'd be overly expensive even though this is AOL, I'd say... Less than half a million. It seems as if the whole thing is useless to them, as if it's just something they're unnecessarily holding on to because of lack of serious interest. Come on SCIProgrammers, huddle around and start saving up those dollars. ;D

Forum Support and Suggestions / SCIProgramming Logo.

Just a little thing, I think it'd make the site look a lot more professional(?) and just visually more attractive to have a logo instead of "SCIProgramming.com" in the top left of the site. Something like "SCIProgramming.com" could then be an Alt for if the image wouldn't load.

<HammyHammerGuy> I always follow this thought process for sandbox builders: house today, nuked tomorrow; be it either an update or by some sheer force that decides to impose itself.
<HammyHammerGuy> Always start fresh another day
<Kawa> What is this, King's Quest VI?
<HammyHammerGuy> Not quite King's Quest as there is no heir to be goned.
<Kawa> HammyHammerGuy: actually the reference is to how the KQ titles are all puns.
<Kawa> So "house today, nuked tomorrow" is a pun on "here today, gone tomorrow" -like KQ6's title is-.
<Kawa> You connected them wrong.
<HammyHammerGuy> bah
<Kawa> But oh well... to err is human.

"house today, nuked tomorrow" sounds like something that would be a tagline / slogan for a video game which is the result of mashing Minecraft and a Battlefield or ARMA game together (Not even going to mention Call of Duty because >:(); A game where you spend a period of time crafting your house or base in the middle of a war-stricken battleground, only for it to be nuked the next day and you have to start again... Sounds pretty awesome actually! 8)
Kawa, whilst we're here talking, I want your permission to feature you as a main character in my SCI debut "No-Shirt Developers" when I get around to even trying to make it... That okay? And yes, that does mean you'll be taking off your shirt.

I thought that was mostly abandoned.

It was.
And then it was picked again.
And this time we have Ben, the author of the original version, so I'd say we have a pretty good chance of success.

Anyone have anything that can convert SCI1+ xxx.snd files to MIDI, or are willing to make a converter for me since I'm not knowledgable in the subject? SoundToMIDI doesn't support anything past SCI0, and SV.EXE makes MIDI files with bogus or unnecessary data such as seperate note on / off volumes and such which makes certain tracks hang or layer notes instead of playing them usually.

I agree. And as I said, we're working on rewriting the INNRevival server.
Great, I'm excited about that.

By the way here is the segment from The Computer Chronicles on INN, broadcast in 1995.

I just found a SCI demo that I never knew existed for the ImagiNation Network (INN).
Unlike INN itself which used a modified version of SCI (called LSCI or Large Model SCI), this demo used the original SCI interpreter (version 1.001.097).

The demo works fine both in DosBox and ScummVM.

I discovered this demo inside an ISO from archive.org:
CD-ROM Today - The Disc #5 (November 1994)
It's under IMAGINE\INNDEMO.

If you don't want to download the entire ISO, I'm hosting a standalone ZIP archive:
INNDEMO.ZIP
I didn't know this existed either, I had quite some fun watching how INN was in it's heyday. The only other insight into INN in it's heyday was when I saw a clip of it on an episode of The Computer Chronicles. I've played INN via INNRevival for a number of years before it went offline sometime last year, and I'm still an advocate that there's a space for INN in the online gaming scene if handled correctly, a online game that is "simple enough for my grandmother to play" as Ken Williams said.
