SCI @ Computer Summer Camp?
« on: November 14, 2015, 12:43:04 PM »
I would like to get a general feeling about this before I put any weight on it:

Would it make any sense to put together a game programming summer camp  primarily using SCI?

Lets say if it were to last one week or two, what can be reasonably accomplished during this time?
Would the SCI platform be a friendly starting point in game coding?
Would it give the kids any kind of a skill set for future opportunities?

I am pondering these questions now that I am working at a school district.

Honest opinions? Feasible, or wouldn't float?

How do you envision it being different from the community competitions? Are you talking about students from your school district?

I'm talking about in general, and nothing at all like a community competition. I'm thinking bigger.

My vision would be for a summer game programming camp for teens interested in programming. With projects written using SCI, playing board games, such as chess or AD&D to build up thinking skills, do a quick review of games in the past and future. I'm fitting SCI into this as a friendly step into a much bigger world.

This would be opposed to similar computer camps were they may use C#, or Javascript, or some other language as a platform.

Getting back to the question at hand, would it make any sense for anyone to set up a computer camp centered around SCI?

While I would love to see something that could expose new people to SCI, I would think that any intent at getting programming experience that they would be better off with something more modern. And if game programming specifically, Unity or even AGS would be more useful. You could broach the idea with those in charge of such things for your school district, but how many of the kids would even be familiar with the Sierra classics? If you do ask, let us know how it goes.

I sent out an email to my boss floating the idea.
I'll see what he says and report back.

Boss says the summer months are pretty busy for our department getting ready for the next semester.

But...he says it's a good idea if we can incorporate the entire spectrum, from computer repair, setting up networks, and so forth. For example, setting up a LAN for a home network, or setting up for a Halo 4 LAN Party, maintenance work on computers for college, and so forth. He will float the idea higher up the ladder to see if our department head for some input.

As for game programming, I'll concede to suggesting Unity or AGS as a modern and more useful alternative to SCI.

That's my answer, then...yes, it's possible.

As for kids being familiar with Sierra classics, I doubt it. Even then, I was thinking of SCI as a general introduction to game making basics, such as animation, character development, game logic, interaction, background art, music, mapping, and so forth.
