Best idea for game based on book.
« on: August 15, 2002, 01:36:47 PM »
I am having trouble deciding what i should do in the terms of story. I have put up the titles of 3 of my favourite books and want to know if people think i should use one as a term for a story or to make my own idea.

Well, I say there's nothing quite as satisfying as seeing your own idea in full action. ;)

The best thing you can do is making your own ideas into a game, but if you don't want to write a story or just haven't got the inspiration lately, you could indeed try to make a game from a book. If you don't know which book you should choose (and personally, I can't help you out with the choises you provide because I don't know them :-\) you could even try to make a game from a movie. I think Casablanca or The Maltese Falcon lend to that. Only problem would be to capture the atmosphere in it, although it is possible--> In QFG2, there are parts of both films in it.

What I'm trying to say, is: try making something which isn't made before. Best way is to write a story of your own, otherwise find some piece of culture which isn't used (or isn't used too often) and make a game like none has been made before. I think that would give the most satisfaction.

Well, I guess I could make my own idea, but as you can see from my website on the Projects page, I'm not quite skilled in that area.
I would, however, be very happy to work with someone on this thing. Kind of a team, so i can get my foot in the door.
And oh, yeah, there was that part that is like in Aladdin where you cant touch any of the jewels.(QFG2)

I've never read any of those books, but a good one would be Fear & Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson. ;D

Make your own game. Book-to-game conversions usually don't go very well. (Shadows Of The Empire, anyone?)  ;D

Anyone ever tried making 'Lord of the Rings' or 'The Hobbit' to AGI/SCI? It should be possible and not too difficult to do so if you're experienced and have a way with the pictures. As a kid, I was always searching for an AGI or SCI-game made from those books. It seemed just as evident that it existed as the KQ an QFG-series (I was looking for them at the same time.) If a kid can feel that it's not more than normal that it exists, it's strange nobody has ever tried making it.

It would be a fun project for someone to convert an old text adventure game to SCI. Since the story is all there, it would be quite easy. Just like Leisure Suit Larry was created from the text adventure SoftPorn. The advantage is that if you pick a great game, you'll already have a great plot, and a large potential player base.

Yeah... Zork would be pretty cool in SCI (AGI would make it seem a bit cheesy, IMO)

I know three things you could do for a story:

1) A parody of some kick-ass tv series

2) A remake of an old classic (Zork?)

3) A filler for a story gap, like SQ:TLC

I had already started work on an Austin powers game but my kid sister deleted all the resources and the backup disks. :(

Restore your game and try again. That's what I always do when I make a fault  ;D.

Wouldn't it be cool if life was like an AGI/SCI game? you just restore and retry if you screw something up... ::)
