WinAGI Donald Duck's Playground DOS
« on: February 14, 2024, 10:27:10 PM »
Hi everyone!

I have a specific question. As a translator, is there a DOS version of Donald Duck's Playground that is compatible with WinAGI? Because a PC Booster image won't be, even if I managed to extract the resources... well, I imagine.

I've been told "there is" a site specializing in Sierra PC Booster game images. I searched without success. Maybe it's closed.

Thread in the old Mega-Tokyo AGI forum archive here:
https://sciprogramming.com/community/index.php?topic=2612.msg19120#msg19120
As the thread was closed, I opened a new one.

AGI Wiki: http://agiwiki.sierrahelp.com//index.php/Donald_Duck%27s_Playground

In the worst-case scenario, I thought I'd translate the game proposed by Al Low on his site. But is not an official release, is was Amiga hacked for DOS. In addition, debugging is essential. This version will crash if you press Escape with "Bad action: 161" when it should pause the game. This problem is corrected via ScummVM only.

Note that ScummVM 2.8.0 recognizes the game as 1.0C Amiga and DOS. The version 1.0C is an Amiga version, not a DOS version. It's a little ScummVM arrangement, I suppose.

I'd like to take this opportunity to thank Collector for Sierra Version Tool.
AGKorson for WinAGI, without which nothing is possible.
My friend Doomlazer for... almost everything :)

Do you know the source code for the game can be found here: https://github.com/historicalsource/donald-ducks-playground ?

It also has the shipped game files - but I don't know which version it was.

And if you're looking for the booter image, it can be found in this archive: https://archive.org/details/20220303_20220303_0527

Hi OmerMor,

I didn't know the GitHub page of the source code.
This is an MS-DOS version:

The version number and version interpreter are not referenced in AGIWiki.
Game Version 1.5 and Interpreter Version 2.440. It appears to be the 1987 DOS version.
It's the most amazing thing!

The Disney contract that Sierra had ended at the end of 1987, so they wouldn't have been able to sell DDP beyond that. This MS DOS version may not have been sold for long.

As an aside, Al Lowe confirmed to me that he was the designer of the original non-AGI Commodore 64 version of Donald Duck's Playground, i.e. he wrote the design spec, but it was actually Chuck Benton that did the programming of that 1984 C64 version. Al did the programming for the AGI port though.
