The communities view on non-freeware games
« on: June 13, 2003, 04:55:22 PM »
I am just curious what the AGI community thinks about this issue. Have there been any (fan-made) AGI-games that has been offered as shareware or which required some sort of payment? What are your views on this topic?

(N.B: I am not thinking about charging money for any games, just curious about if this has happened at all or if it's even likely to happen).

Files would have to be distributed without the interpreters I guess, but still, it's an interesting topic. I would personally gladly pay a smaller fee (3-5$) for a well-made and reasonably large fan-made AGI game.

IIRC, asking money's not allowed for products made with AGI Studio. If my memory fails me on that, it's still right on this: there haven't been any fan-made AGI-games made and sold. They were all free.

I see. I started thinking when I noticed that some of the AGS'ers are selling their games and that made me curious of there's been anyting like that in the AGI community.

Naturally I would prefer if all AGI-games are free, I'd rather just donate money to a person/team I really think has deserved it by creating a fabulous AGI-game.

Curiosity killed the cat :).

I know only an ags shareware game: the adventures of Fatman.

I guess the author's Fatman'paid some royalties to Chris Jones for using AGS to sell.

If not, the tread of Fatman would be deleted in AGS board.

Myself I made AGI games for free but I saw some shareware / freeware publishers put my agi games on cd-rom without asking me permission.

If somebody wants to sell agi games, he/she should ask Sierra first before making games.

Robin: Someone is selling _your_ games without permission? Ouch, I'm sorry to hear that.

Well, if you could come to some sort of "deal" with any of the other interpreter teams maybe there would be possible to actually sell a game. It's in the laws grey area but still..

Donating is much better though, we should just stick to that :).

You know, you can always donate money to people who created/worked on AGI Studio, NAGI,...

Yes, that's old news. I was more thinking along the lines of game creators who spend a lot of time designing great games.

We all make games from our free time and for fun, not for money.

Don't worry about that. My games are free anyway and I don't expected to receive money.  It's a good thing to put my games on their cd-roms.

Well, of course, but it's the "without" permission part that is not very nice. I wouldn't want anyone to include my stuff on any of their CD's if they hadn't asked me first.

None of my documents enclosed with my games noted that you should ask me first before put my games on your cd-roms or even on your sites.

It's okay for me to see my games on cd-roms and other sites.

!?!? I have all respect for your views, I was just alarmed that someone was making money from a product that you conceived as free..

It would bother me , but if it does not bother you then I guess that it's allright.

Peace :)
