Help with PicEdit
« on: January 15, 2004, 09:32:35 PM »
I am having trouble with PicEdit and perhaps someone could help me. I have a .pcx that I am trying to make into an AGI picture. I've tried pcx2pic but I can't seem to get it to work. Perhaps that has to do with the fact I'm running in windows xp. But, is it possible to use this program to make the standard 16 color format or does it only work with 256 color pictures.

The other thing I tried was loading the .pcx file as the background of picedit, but I can't seem to get that to work either. It seems to squeeze the picture. Also, I can't seem to save when I do this as well.

Any tips anyone?

to convert a pcx to a picture, try using the program called 'vector' it is available from the links on this messageboard.  If it is a photo, or something with lots of detail, it may not convert too well.

The background feature in picedit is only for tracing - ie you load in a photo and trace over it in picedit (pressing F10 turns the picture on and off). The image has to be 320x168 with 256 colours. Really, there is no 'easy' way to get a bitmap type image into a vectorised one. I use the latter method mentioned above, and a little patience.

Hope this helps.

Thanks. I used vector, and although the picture looked quite good, it didn't have the colors I wanted and it turned out to be quite a big file.

So, I used pic edit with the picture in the background, and it came out to be quite a fantastic picture. Probably the best picture I've ever drawn on a computer. Anyway, thanks. My game is getting so close to being done.

I've decided to incorporate a small arcade sequence of sorts, involving a sword fight here at the end of the game. I don't know how involved it will get. I was originally going to have it be a cutscene completely controlled by the computer, but that's really no fun. I'll work something out.

Argghhh! I got it to work before but I can't now. I'm bringing in a PCX file into PicEdit in order to trace over it, but I can't get it to quite work. I've tried the picture in 300x200 as well as 300x168. Both at 256 colors. When I hit the F10 button in PicEdit I get a mostly black background with a few white dots that are kind of an outline of the image, but very incomplete. Does anyone know what I'm doing wrong? Why is it not appearing in brilliant 256 color in PicEdit?

Thanks

I got it to work. I remade the .pcx file. I don't know what I did differently, but it liked it the second time. Oh well...
