February Prop (View) Competition
« on: February 13, 2011, 04:38:00 PM »
I'd like to propose a recurring monthly competition, all based around props/views.  Winner of each months comp. judges the next month & picks the subject of the next prop - as well as any 'rules' for the comp. that they choose.

All submitted props in competitions will be put in the SCI Art Gallery, for all to use in their game endeavors.

We are nearly half-way into February, but this competition shouldn't involve much time.  I would think less than a day's work in total, right?

This month's subject:  A brass lantern.  No additional competition rules, no restrictions, interpret the requirements as you will.

don't forget as a competition sponsor, you may need to come up with the trophies...

A Brass lantern, kind of wish we had orange in our pallette.  :P

Yeah, I missed the orange too.  I'll put together some trophies.

On another note, I completed my entry last night.  The whole process took under 2 hours (used Companion), and I'd never created a view before.

Great idea for a competition, rather than a whole game! I still have a week of school left but after that I'll whip something up myself probably. Is there a size limit? Like would this be used "by the Ego" or would it be like an Inventory view or something? Does it matter?

I struggled with the requirements as well.  I put together an animated view of a lantern that could be held by the ego, but that is just me (and I can't win).  I think any size would be fine (a large prop could be placed in the foreground of a room I suppose) as would a prop appropriate for an 'inventory view'.

Ultimately, it was harder to define restrictive requirements than I cared for, so I'm leaving the interpretation up to the competitors...

Thank you sir.

Anytime during the last day of the month (and perhaps a few days after), people should upload their art to this new category.  We'll want to get things judged promptly so we can move on to the next month's competition :)

Okay, there are only a few days of the month left!  Still plenty of time to get a submission whipped up & ready to enter into the competition.  Seriously folks, you could probably even put together a submission with MS Paint if you are not familiar with the SCI tools (just be sure to follow the palette restrictions).

Please place all submissions in the gallery under the 'Competition Entries' section starting Feb. 28th & no later than Mar. 2nd in bmp format (other lossless formats would work too, but let's keep it simple).  If you are submitting an animated view/sprite, please only submit a single bitmap file (for examples, look in the 'Public Domain' section of the gallery).

Good luck & I look forward to your entries!

Not sure if anyone else is planning to submit: at this point I think not.  However, let's give it another day and we'll move on to the judging.
